Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted over at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about and have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released, but not necessarily. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, which was originally hosted at Breaking the Spine.
My pick for this week is a near-future pulp tale of bandits, fascists, and queer librarian spies from the woman who brought man-eating hippos to the Mississippi River.

Title: Upright Women Wanted
Author: Sarah Gailey
Publisher: Tor.com
Publication Date: Feb 4, 2020
Genres: Urban Fantasy
Shelves: Female-author, Female-fronted-fantasy
In Upright Women Wanted, award-winning author Sarah Gailey reinvents the pulp Western with an explicitly antifascist, near-future story of queer identity.
“That girl’s got more wrong notions than a barn owl’s got mean looks.”
Esther is a stowaway. She’s hidden herself away in the Librarian’s book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her—a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda.
The future American Southwest is full of bandits, fascists, and queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing.
I’m looking forward to this as well:-) I read Magic for Liars by Gailey earlier this year and loved it!
