Avast ye mateys! They say dead men tell no tales, but sexy elves from another realm certainly do, and My Girlfriends are Pirate Elves! is guaranteed to shiver ye timbers.
Eden Redd achieves the perfect mix of erotic romance, urban fantasy, and portal fantasy here, mixing elves, pirates, magic, and superpowers. It’s a story that varies from sweet and wholesome, to action-packed and humorous, to bold and sexy. The characters are the main attraction here, strong enough and likable enough to carry the story without the erotic elements – although that certainly adds a fun element.
Jon is a lonely inspector, working the seaside docks nearest the magical portal between Urth and Aquris. He is a man with secrets, a past and a family from which he’d like to distance himself. Without spoiling the who and why, he is possessed of supernatural luck, as we see in the opening scenes where he strolls carelessly through a mess of downed power lines. Captain Lillian Silk of the Dark Heart is an elf sailor with secrets of her own (being a pirate is only one of them) with a shipment of ambrosia fruit to be inspected. When an innocent movement leads to an even more innocent kiss, a bond is formed, one that leaves Jon reeling as Captain Silk and her crew of beautiful, dangerous female elves arrange to live with him – and take him as their shared Shullkar (or boyfriend).
The fish-out-of-water aspect of the elves is the source of much of the story’s humor, with TV (news and porn) and a seaside carnival some of the highlights. The awkward will-they-won’t-they dynamic of the polyamorous romance is perfectly played, emotional and entertaining, with the well-earned moments of playful eroticism accentuating the character connections. It’s more than just playful fun, though – the Captain has some dark secrets, a past history that makes it hard for her to open up to Jon, and her crew has an even bigger secret that threatens them all.
I will say no more about that bigger secret, because it drives the entire second half of the book, full of fantastic battles and exciting confrontations. Comedic, romantic, and action-packed, My Girlfriends are Pirate Elves! is my favorite Eden Redd story yet and I really hope she returns to the world again soon.
