Stacking the Shelves

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books we are adding to our shelves, whether they be physical or digital. This includes books bought (my wife would say I buy too many), borrowed (a rare occurrence), and received for review (which I’m trying to reign in).

New Acquisitions: Paperback Treasures

A pair of new arrivals in the mailbox this week…

Deserter & Defiant are books 2 & 3 of the Kris Longknife series by Mike Shepherd (I’m still waiting on Mutineer, the first book) in which a daughter of privilege, raised only to be beautiful and to marry well, enlists in the marines and becomes a kick-ass space warrior. Yes please!

Review Titles

I’m still doing a good job of reigning in the ARC requests, but I’ve been anxiously awaiting the first, and the other two came pre-approved so I just couldn’t pass them up.

First up is a finished copy of The Memory of Souls, book 3 of A Chorus of Dragons, by Jenn Lyons [August 25, 2020]. I’ve been reading an e-ARC of this one, but the footnotes are such a huge part of the narrative, it was frustrating. I’ll likely go back and skim the first half again just to catch them all and then lose myself in the rest.

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk [Oct. 13 2020] is an urban fantasy in a magical Georgian England setting where married women must sacrifice their magic, leading one sorceress to balance becoming the first great female magician against her duty to her family.

The Frozen Crown by Greta Kelly [January 12, 2021] is the story of a princess with a powerful and dangerous secret (she’s a gifted witch) who must find a way to save her country from ruthless invaders.

New Acquisitions: Digital Titles

A handful of digital downloads this week, starting with 2 picks from the BookFunnel collection of thriller novels featuring kickass women, and finishing with a few Kindle freebie finds.

Snowspelled, first in the Harwood Spellbook saga by Stephanie Burgis, was a free download this week. A “witty and sparkling romantic fantasy novella” about the first woman magician in Angland, it’s a series I’ve had my eye on for a while now.

The Magical Girl is a Boy by Pedoro Pedoro is a gender-bending twist on the magical girl trope, complete with a little romance.

Stiff Things: The Splatterporn Anthology, edited by Randy Chandler & Cheryl Mullenax, is a collection of hardcore stories that penetrate new depths of psychosxual horror.

  1. I’ve also been curious about The Frozen Crown. I think I’ll wait to see what you think before I read it though. And I have an eARC of The Midnight Bargain as well!

  2. Seeing it here reminds me that I have Snowspelled buried somewhere on my TBR – and that it would make an ideal read just now! Thank you for the reminder and I hope that you enjoy your new acquisitions:))
