My third literary dalliance with the magnificent Regina Watts, Her Roman Slave further proves that she can apply her erotic imagination to just about any genre and find something new and exciting within it to delight readers.

What excited me most about this was the multiple levels on which it works. It’s a story about genders, classes and roles that’s given added significance through the taboo of institutionalized slavery. In a world where it’s already unusual to see a woman such as Marcella hold such erotic power over a Roman Senator, it’s even more forbidden for her to take a slave as a lover. One affair risks mere scandal, the other risks her very freedom, and yet she is a domina and she shall claim what she desires.

The raw, sexual power and noble authority of Marcella is so intense that you can feel it in her every word, her every movement. This is a woman who expects satisfaction as her natural due, but one who also enjoys seeing her partners aroused and desperate. She is deliciously verbal, both in how she teases and humiliates Faustus, knowing he is already desperate to please her, and in how she seduces and commands Atticus, recognizing in him the desire to serve. A Mistress of detail and decadence, Watts does an exquisite job of highlighting the distinctions between the power exchanges, glossing over the former with haughty, dismissive snippets of narrative while indulging in the latter with passionate, detailed explorations of every word, every sound, every touch.

That taboo of domina and slave hangs heavy over the entire story, reminding us that indulging Her Roman Slave is far more than just an illicit dalliance, and the way in which exposure leads to a wider, darker, more depraved dynamic is breathtaking to witness.
